![]() The Embroidery Sewing MachineThis has to be one of technology’s greatest marriages. The sewing machine and the embroidery machine. The whole point is that this combination is within the reach of most people. With a combination machine you surely have every function at your finger tips that you could possibly want. You can make a garment then embellish it with embroidery. You can get totally plain and inexpensive bed linen and turn it into something stunningly beautiful just with the addition of some tasteful embroidery. In fact you can turn anything plain into something really distinctive and unique. You probably wouldn’t find anything exactly the same no matter how hard you look. The other point is that all of this production can be made in the comfort of your own home. When you buy an embroidery sewing machine you will get many extras that come with it as standard, but in this industry there are so many other add-ons, you can literally turn your home machine into a little cottage industry, manufacturing your own unique items, designed and created by you. You can probably get all the fun you want just out of producing items for your own home or family, but there is always the added bonus that you can produce items for sale. If it becomes known to other people that you can produce good professional looking embroidered items I think you will be surprized at how easy it would be to make yourself some extra money. As far as designs go you are not limited to just the designs that are built in to your machine, you can buy memory cards or you can get software that enables you to download designs from the Internet. There are literally thousands and thousands available either free or very inexpensive. With personal embroidery sewing machines you have to manually thread each separate color as it is reached in the design. Some more industrial machines have the facility to pre-thread about 15 different needles and the machine will automatically pick the color it wants from this number. On some of the more advanced machines there are larger screens which give you the ability to edit and change your design. Replacing certain stitches with another and perhaps just moving parts of the design around somewhat. This means that the number of design variatio can be virtually limitless. Some machines have a larger embroidery work area, but I think the minimum is around 4″ x 4″. I wouldn’t not advise a beginner to contemplate buying a hugely expensive embroidery sewing machine when they have perhaps never even used an ordinary sewing machine before. You may find that you will not get the full benefit of all of its functions. There are many machines that would be suitable for a relative beginner. Buy what you can comfortably afford and one that will suit your requirements. Write down what you would reasonably expect from an embroidery sewing machine. What are the items you particularly want to produce? Think about size of embroidery motifs. It is always best to talk to experts before you commit yourself to a huge amount of money. Take their advice, I feel sure that they would not steer you wrong and talk you into buying an unsuitable machine for your capabilities. Having said that, quite honestly some of the machines that at first sight would appear quite daunting are not really, as long as you don’t try to jump in with both feet. Give yourself time to absorb instructions, then practice before you start on your good fabrics, you wouldn’t want to waste them. |
